THE GRAND HYATT NUSA DUA
DESIGN ARCHITECT ON RECORD
750 ROOMS 5 STAR HOTEL AT NUSA DUA, BALI BY SHIMIZU DEXTAM J.O JAKARTA
Opened in 1989, Grand Hyatt Bali became one of the most iconic and influential resort developments within the Nusa Dua Tourism Development. Its opening represented a major milestone in Bali’s hospitality history, setting new standards for scale, design integration, and resort experience.
Designed as a village-style resort, Grand Hyatt Bali departed from conventional hotel blocks by organizing accommodation, public spaces, and amenities into a series of low-rise pavilions connected by lush gardens, courtyards, and expansive lagoon systems. Water features played a central role, enhancing microclimate comfort while creating a strong visual and experiential identity throughout the resort.
Architecturally, the resort blends Balinese vernacular principles with contemporary resort planning. Traditional roof forms, open-air circulation, stone detailing, and layered landscapes were carefully integrated to reflect local culture while accommodating international luxury standards. The result was a resort that felt immersive, human-scaled, and deeply connected to its tropical context.
As one of the anchor hotels in Nusa Dua, Grand Hyatt Bali helped define the area’s reputation as a world-class, master-planned resort destination. Its design approach influenced subsequent hospitality developments in Bali and remains a reference point for large-scale tropical resort architecture to this day.
