In 1987, Nusa Dua Tourism Development stood as one of Indonesia’s most ambitious and well-planned tourism projects, developed as a purpose-built international resort enclave in Bali. Initiated by the Indonesian government through what is now known as ITDC (formerly BTDC), Nusa Dua was conceived to position Bali as a world-class tourism destination while preserving cultural integrity and environmental order.
By the late 1980s, Nusa Dua had already established its core identity: a controlled, master-planned resort area featuring luxury hotels, convention facilities, manicured landscapes, and integrated infrastructure. The development emphasized clear zoning, secure access, high construction standards, and comprehensive utilities—setting a new benchmark for large-scale resort planning in Indonesia.
The vision behind Nusa Dua in 1987 was not only economic growth, but also sustainable tourism management. By concentrating large hotels within a designated area, the development aimed to protect Bali’s traditional villages and cultural landscapes from uncontrolled expansion. This approach made Nusa Dua a model for resort planning across Southeast Asia.
Today, the foundations laid during that period continue to define Nusa Dua as a prestigious, orderly, and internationally recognized tourism destination, hosting global events and serving as a reference point for integrated resort development in the region.
