PITAMAHA RESORT
CONCEPT ARCHITECT
BOUTIQUE RESORT – TJAMPUHAN ,UBUD, BALI BY TJOKORDA OKA SUKAWATI
Established in 1991, Pitamaha Tjampuhan Resort is one of Ubud’s most historically significant resorts, renowned for its pioneering role in shaping culturally rooted, nature-integrated hospitality architecture in Bali.
Located at the sacred confluence (tukad campuhan) of two rivers overlooking the Ayung River valley, the resort was conceived as a living expression of traditional Balinese philosophy, where architecture, landscape, and spirituality coexist in harmony. Rather than imposing built form onto the site, the design carefully followed the natural topography, preserving riverbanks, mature vegetation, and sacred spatial alignments.
Architecturally, Pitamaha Tjampuhan Resort adopted a village-like composition of individual villas and pavilions, inspired by traditional Balinese compounds. Natural materials, handcrafted detailing, open-air spaces, and layered landscaping were used to create an atmosphere of authenticity, tranquility, and deep connection to place.
As one of the early luxury resorts in Ubud, Pitamaha Tjampuhan set a benchmark for eco-conscious, culturally respectful resort development. Its design philosophy influenced generations of hospitality projects in Bali, particularly in Ubud, and remains a reference point for resorts that seek to balance luxury, tradition, and environmental sensitivity.
